Great advice for Sisters!

I started wondering how that “first impression” of joining a Chapter plays a part in new members feeling like they belong. Are we missing an opportunity to create a lasting relationship by assuming that people can figure it out themselves? Maybe trying these tips could help new members feel more like a part of the Chapter...

1. Remember to set a good example. Be the Star she will want to emulate.
2. Always make them feel wanted or useful. Ask them for help or input.
3. Always stay in touch. If you haven't seen her in a while...call her and see why.
4. Don't be too dominating or pushy. No one likes it when someone they just met is too insistent.
5. Ask about her hobbies. You may have something in common.
6. Spread the news after she completes her proficiency. Let the world know about who she is and that you're glad she joined.
7. Ask her to hang out with you and other seasoned sisters occasionally. She may be lots of fun.
8. Don't patronize or put down your sister when she makes a mistake. She is new and you were too once upon a time.
8. Watch out for her. Make sure others don't steer her wrong.
9. Help them out if she asks and you're able to. It may mean the world to her.
10. Be there for her. We all may need a shoulder to lean on one day.
11. Teach her what is right and wrong. Try to show her the right way to do things.
12. Offer them a small gift when they attend their first meeting. A bookmark, a card, a pencil, small pin, or a coffee mug can bring a smile to a new member's face.
13. Sit down her and ask if she has any questions. She may not know where to go when she does want to know something.

There is no perfect combination of actions that will guarantee a new member will stay forever but there's nothing wrong with making them feel as though you want them around when they join.
